What does the research involve?
The aim of this study is to investigate the opinions of professional subtitlers on a new method for requesting briefing materials and instructions from clients. You will be shown a checklist that may be used to request relevant materials/information from clients during the pre-translation stage. Subsequently, you will be asked which items on the checklist you would select if you were contracted to subtitle several hypothetical films. Lastly, you will be asked to assess the usefulness of this system for requesting briefing from clients, and whether there are any items that you would add or remove from the checklist. Results from this survey will be included in Hugh Nettelbeck’s PhD thesis and future publications based on this research. The survey should take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.
Why were you chosen for this research?
As a professional subtitler, you have been approached because you are able to provide insight into usability and acceptability of a request form for subtitle briefing.
Consenting to participate in the project and withdrawing from the research
By choosing to participate in this survey, you are consenting to your responses being stored on Qualtrics and included in Hugh Nettelbeck’s research. You may choose to drop out at any time.
Benefits of this research
This survey will help to assess the potential viability and usefulness of the proposed approach to facilitating more thorough briefing in the pre-translation stage. Development of this approach may serve as an important step towards improving subtitling outcomes and reducing completion time.
Potential risks to participants
None.
Confidentiality
All survey responses will be anonymous. Written responses may be quoted in research published by Hugh Nettelbeck.
