What is the aim of the study?
A number of foods in our diet (for example tea, herbs and spices, whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables and fermented foods) contain compounds that may help to lower levels of inflammation in the body. The aim of this study is to examine how meals that contain a high amounts of these anti-inflammatory compounds effect circulating markers of inflammation. This research will contribute to the evidence for a whole diet approach in reducing markers of systemic inflammation, which will have population benefits for chronic disease risk and management.
What will I be asked to do if I take part?
Once you have completed the online screening questionnaire and if you meet our eligibility criteria, you will be invited to come in and meet with a researcher at the Be Active Sleep & Eat (BASE) facility (Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food, Monash University), located at Level 1, 264 Ferntree Gully Rd, Notting Hill. At the screening session we will take measurements of your height, weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure. At this stage, if you meet our eligibility criteria, you will be invited to take part in our study.
As part of the study, you will be asked to take part in 3 testing visits (from 8:00am – 1:30pm), at least 1 week apart. During each of these visits, you will be given a test meal to consume. We will then take several small blood samples via a cannula during the following 5 hours.
Please be reassured that participating in this study will not impact on your work schedule and capacity. Your visits to the BASE facility will be arranged on your days-off and at a time convenient to you.
Payment
Participants will be offered a free 30 minute nutrition consultation with an Accredited Practising Dietitian on completion of the study. Participants will also receive a report of their own body composition from their DXA scan. Such a scan would cost $80-100 to source privately. Additionally, participants will receive a copy of the Monash University e-book 'Using Food as Medicine: Fighting Inflammation'.
