Assisted therapy for concurrent treatment of PTSD and Alcohol Use Disorder

For many Australians seeking help for alcohol use (Alcohol Use Disorder or AUD), attempts at recovery are complicated by co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). New evidence supports integrated treatments, whereby the two problems of PTSD and AUD are treated together at the same time.

This study is investigating whether MDMA-assisted therapy is a safe and effective treatment for the management of both AUD and PTSD. While there is some evidence to show that MDMA-assisted psychotherapy may help reduce PTSD symptoms, there has not been a clinical trial to assess whether MDMA-assisted therapy could be beneficial for people with both PTSD and AUD.

We are offering a 16-week treatment program for those who want to address PTSD symptoms and cut down on their drinking. All participants will receive 12 sessions of gold-standard psychological treatment for comorbid PTSD and AUD, called Concurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders Using Prolonged Exposure (COPE). In addition, there will be two treatment sessions where participants will be randomly assigned to receive either MDMA or control.

This program may suit those who:
* Are diagnosed with PTSD
* Are having difficulties cutting down or controlling their drinking
* Are willing to participate in a randomised controlled trial

The trial will be recruiting participants in Melbourne and Sydney. Participation in this trial will not result in any cost to you. You will be compensated for your time.
